McIntosh DBR is delighted to announce that we recently won the Best Extension to an Existing Home at the Mendip District Council Building Excellence Awards 2016. We are thrilled to be recognised for this achievement, which has led to us also being put forward for another award, the LABC South West Building Excellence Awards 2016. We’ll tell you a bit more about both awards below, as well as the property that led to us receiving such a great accolade.
The Mendip District Council Building Excellence Awards are designed to recognise and reward projects that are built to the highest level of project management, workmanship and design. The event took place on Friday 15th April at The Coach House in East Pennard, and the location was significant because The Coach House previously won the Best Commercial Building up to £1 Million Award in 2015. The most recent ceremony was the 9th of its kind, and we were delighted to be recognised, let alone walk away as winners.
The winning property
The property that brought us home the reward was a Barn Conversion in Somerset. This was a renovation and restoration project of Bean Hill Farm, which is based close to Bruton. We were brought in to help the owners take advantage of the breath taking views across the valley, while they also wanted to maximise the space available in the house. We carried out a full refurbishment of the existing barn as well as a new kitchen extension, both of which were connected via a new glazed link.
Overcoming issues, achieving results
We needed to make sure that our presence was not intrusive to the family during this period, and we needed the building work to be complete during the summer holidays so that the family could escape whenever they needed to. We enjoyed the project immensely. It took six months to complete and we worked alongside Papilio Interiors for the final furniture installation and a local architectural designer. We worked hard to ensure the roof structure was supported effectively and the stonework matched the existing walls. We were delighted with the results.
The next level
As a consequence of winning the Best Extension to an Existing Home at the Mendip District Council Building Excellence Awards 2016, we have also automatically been put forward as regional finalists in the LABC South West Building Excellence Awards 2016. This is for the same project that has been mentioned above. The event takes place in several weeks, on Friday 1st July, at the Holiday Inn, Armarda Way, Plymouth. Last year’s winners were The Crabpot from Fowey in Cornwall, and we’d be delighted if we could follow suit. But, either way, we’re pleased to be a part of such a fantastic award show. We’ll be sure to let you all know how it goes!
